Alcohol (Prices, regulations/laws, comparison with income, effect on people's health, statistics, problems with authorities)

By: Ina Josefsen, Marie Mathæussen, Tuperna B.L. Møller

1 liter beer cost 48 Danish kroner in Greenland.  Without paint.

Age limit is 18 for drinking and buying alcohol here in Greenland and in Estonia.  Here in Greenland young people drinks “all over” and the police “don’t” see the young people being drunk, but in Estonia they watch young people who are drinking and if they see who’s under 18 they took them to detention, so they can sleep over in police station until they aren’t drunk any more.

From 1-3 scale is alcohol and violence in Greenland is 1,96. When they mix alcohol and violence in Greenland is very high in the scale, the reason may be that they couldn’t control their emotions when there are drunk.

We showed the alcohol prices when the Estonians where in Sisimiut, they thought that the prices were too high in Greenland. The Estonians can see that the prices are much higher than the prices in Estonia, for example can vodka, beer, and whiskey cost double. We also went to pubs to show the Estonians how some of the Greenlanders drinks.

The statistics shows in percents how many men and women drink.

We went to the store, and wrote food prices, of what we usually buy on a week (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks)

Conclusion:
Food prices are too high in Greenland. That is because of transport from Denmark. Gas price is rising and the transports are going to rise too, that means the food we transport from Denmark will rise too. If Greenland could make its own food products, the prices would be much lower. Greenland is producing for ex. potatoes and some vegetables. The beginning of self producing of vegetables is slow, also because of the cold weather. Meanwhile we have to cooperate with closer countries, so the food pricescould be lower.

School (How facilities contribute effect student spare time possibilities of personal development)

By: Paninnguaq Kristensen, Sørine Lyberth, Karen Zeeb, Kristina Johansen, Rita Christensen.

What can the school offer students?
In the spare time there is a chance to play football, to paint; sometimes there can be arranged parties.
The school wants to offer more activities, but if it is the students have to take the responsibility to start and control the activity.
Activities are not in the schools syllabus, whether it is positive or negative you may decide yourself.
There are few students who are starting an activity. E.g. Zumba-fitness, cross-country skiing, photography and more.
What can the town Sisimiut offer?
Nipesi (music school), different kind of sport, night-school, knitting club, cinema, storytelling in Taseralik, dog-sledge club, snowmobile club, hunting, sailing, handcraft, dancing, gym, youth clubs ect.ect..
In different kind of sport there can be e.g. handball, football, Inuit-games, cross-country skiing, boxing, badminton, ping-pong, qajaq (kayak) club, Greenlandic traditional dance, acting ect.ect..
What kind of effect does it have on the people in Sisimiut?
Kids from primary school are usually offered after school activities. Those activities can help the kids to stay away from the streets. Afternoon activities are not only offered for children, adults and teenagers also have the option to participate in any of the after school options from above.
To keep the citizens healthy is definitely a benefit for the government; sports that are offered to every citizen will prevent the people from getting ill, which in the longer run will acquire less medical care compared to those that do not do sports. Keeping workers healthy is also good for the labor market, especially for the co-workers and the work provider (the boss). The co-workers won’t have to work extra because they have to do the ill persons’ job. Being healthy is absolutely a benefit for carpenters, bricklayers and so on, because they have to deliver their work in time. If one or more persons are absent it will take longer time to get done and the boss will have to pay fines for being late.
People participate in many different activities; it helps people to be social. It increases the life quality and helps people think more positive. And we get more creative, that is a good thing; because we get more independent. Independency and creativeness are popular in the labour market.

School (Subjects and seperation of gender)

By: Nivi Olsen, Aputsiaq Thygesen

When we where in Estonia we thought it was unusual that they had gender seperation in some subjects. Here in Greenland we have no such thing, so we thuoght it would be a good project to work with.  The work that we have done, mostly takes place in the public school in the olderst student. We have researched for seperation of gender and we also have worked with Minngortuunnguup Atuarfia, mostly to show the Estonians how the school works in Greenland.

Differences in fitness culture.

By: Miki Davidsen, Aputsiaq Olsen, Tony Heilmann

Our project is about the differences in fitness culture, between Estonia(Saaremaa) & Greenland(Sisimiut). In the past, around 1940's, it was an everyday thing for Greenlanders to fish, hunt deers, walk in the nature over long distance etc., which is how they naturally exercised, keeping in form. But today, it's not like that anymore, as you can just buy food from the stores when you're hungry or take something out of the fridge and not need to fish or hunt deers, there are taxis to move around the town when needed, and fitness centers to keep in form, its also become an everyday thing to do sports, like Handball, Football, Crosscountry skiing etc., which of course is an upside. In composition of how the Greenlanders lived in the past, todays way of living is way different, which can be one of the many reasons for that there are some overweight people, perhaps most of them being kids since sugarfilled candys are available in the stores, which are usually mostly bought by kids. Another reason that can be brought to light for the overweight problem, is that the Greenlanders don't move as much as they did in the past, since, as already said, there are taxis to move around the town, boats or planes to get to another city.

So we think that people should stop being lazy and start exercise more and become healthier overall.
